The Mullahs and Khans announce a holy war, which is called a Jihad against the communist side of Afghanistan. 85,000 troops from the soviet union were sent of to Kabul in December 1979. This is when President Taraki was killed and his Khalq inheritor also when Hafizuallah Amin got killed. It was said that the troops were sent by President Amin, although they felt that the civil conflict that was created by Khalq policies intimidated their impact and investments in Afghanistan (Gritzner, Jeffrey A. "5 The Soviet Invasion and Its Aftermath.").
The war was a hard place for the Soviet’s. The Mujahideen fought well and they had tactics of where to hide. They used to hide in the mountains. They were also defending their religion (Islam) and their land. The Mujahideens did not want a communist government. So that is why they were getting help from the U.S. and they were against the Soviets. |
