Early Political Career & Presidential Motives Nixon began his journey in the presidential realm by first serving as a Navy lieutenant and commander for the United States in the Pacific during World War II. Richard Nixon was also the leader of the Nixon administration which was the group he was involved in during his time in office. Upon departing from his service as commander in 1946, he was elected to Congress as a Republican where he represented the Twelfth District of California. In the Presidential campaigns of 1960, Nixon was defeated by John F. Kennedy. However, he redeemed himself by winning the Republican presidential elections against Vice President Hubert Humphrey in 1968, overpowering by a landslide. Nixon won with a campaign that promised to re-establish “law and order” and reconcile with enemies. He was a determined leader who sought to stabilize relations with the Soviet Union (which was one of the two superpowers (the United States the other superpower) during the Cold War) and China although he viewed both countries as the same, common enemies. Nixon was a loyal anticommunist but had plans to break down tensions with Communist blocks. |
